the ocean cabin

In Biarritz, Gilles&Boissier breathes new life into a former 19th-century laundry building. A warm interior entirely reimagined around cedar, raw materials and light – an intimate retreat where the duo’s signature language meets the spirit of the Basque Country.

biarritz, france

Almost invisible from the street, this former nineteenth-century laundry reveals itself like a secret. Once the threshold is crossed, the house unfolds as a space entirely rethought around materiality. Cedar runs throughout as a guiding thread: light in the living area, where it clads walls, banquettes and furniture; brushed black, marking the transition to the kitchen and structuring the space. The whole favors a direct, local materiality that anchors the house in the Basque Country.

On the ground floor, the living and dining room embody the spirit of the place: a true “heart of the house” where one lives, works, reclines and receives. Works of art and carefully chosen pieces punctuate the space, now extended by a large picture window framing the garden.

The kitchen, compact and precise, disappears behind two panels of brushed black cedar. It combines Basque stone, wood and plaster in a mineral yet warm register.

Upstairs, bedrooms and bathrooms continue this sensitive language: light tones, irregular textures and bespoke furniture. The main bathroom, conceived like a bedroom open to the garden, blends marble, cedar and natural light in a calm, almost seaside atmosphere.

«That dog hiding under the table is just like this house—almost invisible from the street, but you discover it the moment you step inside.»

Dorothée Boissier
