buddakan
First international project for the studio, Buddakan marks a founding milestone in the history of Gilles&Boissier. Opened in New York in 2005, this Asian restaurant immediately established a strong design language: spectacular volumes, noble materials and classical references propelled into a resolutely contemporary aesthetic. More than twenty years after its opening, Buddakan remains an iconic address on the New York dining scene, proof of a signature capable of standing the test of time.

Designed in the heart of Manhattan, Buddakan was the first project undertaken by Gilles&Boissier after founding their studio. This vast pan-Asian restaurant, located in the Meatpacking District, introduced an approach that would become the duo’s signature: a spectacular architecture where materiality and classical references are reinterpreted through a contemporary language.
The main dining room unfolds beneath an impressive double-height ceiling. Its walls are clad in large classical wood panelling that structures the space and creates a theatrical atmosphere. This sense of monumentality gives the restaurant the feel of a scenographic setting, where every detail contributes to the overall experience.
From this very first project, Gilles&Boissier’s design language was already clearly defined: the reinterpretation of classical elements—mouldings, wood panelling, architectural panels—and the omnipresence of material. Here, deeply brushed wood becomes the central element of the décor.
Placed within a contemporary context, these codes escape any sense of period or trend. More than twenty years after its opening, Buddakan remains an iconic New York address. Beyond a style, this first project already revealed what would become the studio’s signature: a timeless aesthetic capable of standing the test of time.
